Though Abrams is never the guy you want to go to finish a story. Who knows? Maybe the third movie will surprise us all.

And it would have left Abrams with at least one more tool in the toolbox. He also could have (given the death of Carrie Fisher) at least removed the other prominent 'main cast' death from the film, and lost nothing in the narrative. But he didn't do it he had almost a year to tool with the movie, but he refused.

The plot offered three or four really great ways that they could have gracefully offed Leia in a way that would have given the character a proper send-off. Like you said, Abrams is paint-by-numbers, but I feel like this movie just through out most of his paints, so what's it going to look like? Probably not too good. The only thing left to do is move forward.Probably my biggest gripe with the movie, honestly, is the fact that I feel it left me with next to no interest in what comes next. It doesn’t have to be air tight (cough cough brother sister kissing cough) but there’s gotta be a plan. You can't have a great trilogy without a thought-out story connecting each segment. Its a fun family film with a bit of everything, that makes Star Wars what Star Wars is. Episode 9 does its best to curve things back to a meaningful arc. It defines the 'feel' of Star Wars for me. Episode 8 proved us wrong, it also proved the filmmakers weren’t on the same page. After Episode 7, all the fans thought we were going to unmask the shadow of Snoke. The ST was written better, acted better, but there was no blueprint for the three movies. In my opinion, it's that plain and simple.

And you can't have a great movie without great characters. Each character is shoved in the back seat of a story that prioritizes political drama. The characters hardly know what to feel ( this is the greatest video I’ve found explaining this). The PT was poorly written, and therefore poorly acted.
